Story behind the song...
Early on in the pandemic lockdown, I like everyone else, was faced with the cancellation of all live shows and touring. After 47 years of on the road touring, 48 albums and over 50 instructional video and audio projects, we (Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer) felt lucky to be able to build community and raise spirits with weekly Facebook shows for both families and adult audiences. We also raised money (and continue to raise funds) for food banks which we know will continue to struggle as the pandemic goes on.
I composed songs and instrumental tunes almost daily. When “Hold Each Other Up” wrote itself, we tried it out in an online show. Shortly after that, multiple artists posted their own version of the song. In Chandler, AZ, a diverse youth acoustic roots group, Jam Pak, did an incredible group version of the song online. It’s become their theme song. The song was used as the end of Ukefest at the Music Center at Strathmore and again, Strathmore is recording it for their Artist in Residence “Fresh Air” concert in November.
As the pandemic goes on, and we face a critical election, we all make choices. I choose to continue to make music that hopefully helps us each “Hold each other up” and “Lift each other high.” I’m a lefty folksinger at heart, having stood at the feet of and sung with Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, Jane Sapp, Rose Saunders and the Children of Selma, Ella Jenkins and so many more.
REFRAIN:
We’re gonna hold each other up
Gonna lift each other high
Gonna love each other better than before
This old world will keep on turning
And our hearts will keep on yearning
For each other when the world is so unsure
Verse
Am We’ve seen troubles in the past
Some gone by and some that last
And there’s one thing that can help us all get by
If we listen to our hearts
Each new day’s a brand new start
We can love each other better if we try
Verse
We have time to be kind
It’s a time to remind
That deep down, our differences are few
And as every minute weighs
Turning worries into days
We believe that our love will bring us through
